250g FPV Plane V1.0-4.0

Febuary 2019

250g FPV Plane V1.0-4.0

This project was started around the same time as my V1 Long Range FPV Plane project, However, until recently, it was very unsucessful, mostly becuase I kept aiming too high, rather than just making a working plane and improving from there.

The First three planes were based on a flying planform, this was to remove the ‘unnesescary’ weight of the tail at the expense of stability. They were also built using components from 3” racing quads (much like the larger FPV plane) and were designed around using 2x NCR18650B cells for power.

This combination did not work well. Due to my wing construction techniue, I couldn’t make the kind of airfoil needed for a flying wing (reflex built into the airfoil) so I got it as close as I could and made up for the rest with up elevator. The motors being used on 3” racing quads at the time was also slightly too small for a 250g plane running on a 2s 18650 battery, so they were underpowered. To make this even worse, to combat the increeased drag that I knew I would be getting from the up elevator that I was going to be using, I decided to make the wingspan shorter.

What this produced was a combination of micro stalling (due to the elevator blanking itself and coming in and out of effectiveness) inability to gain height or speed, due to afforemetioned micro stalling and lack of power and short flight times due to having to be at full power just to stay in the air (45 minutes was possible, but this was low for what I was expecting)
